WCC Women's Rowing Notes

THE 2009 SEASON GOT UNDERWAY THIS MONTH
The West Coast Conference women's rowing season got started this month with four out of the five teams competing in meets. Gonzaga's second novice 8 team took down Oregon State in a dual meet, while LMU won the Parker Cup Title for the first time since 2006. Saint Mary's had two first place finishes at the Sacramento Invitational, while Santa Clara's varsity four took second at the UC Davis and Sacramento Invitationals. San Diego will open its season when it heads to the Pac-10 Challenge and the Berg Cup.

WCC TEAM NOTES

SCHOOL TEAM NOTES

  • The Gonzaga University women's rowing team opened its spring season against Oregon State University in Liberty Lake.

  • The Bulldogs had its second Novice 8 team win its race with a time of 7:44.89 beating OSU who finished at 7:50.58.

  • The second Novice 8 team was made up of Lindsey Devaney, Alicia Adams, Michelle Conway, Olivia Miller, Kat Storwick, Maryssa Thompson, Molly McGarry, Lauren Worcester, Maria Franciscovich.

  • Gonzaga takes on Washington State in its next meet on March 28.
  • LMU Women's Rowing started their season with a title at the Parker Cup on Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey. It's the Lions first Parker Cup title since 2006 and the first under new coordinator of rowing, Dawn Regan.

  • The Lions were led by the Women's Varsity 8+. LMU raced the 2000 meter course in a time 6:52.2. San Diego State was a little more than a second behind with a time of 6:53.9 while UC Irvine finished in a distant third of 7:19.9.

  • In the annual Battle of Ballona against UCLA, the women were swept in all three races. The varsity 4 proved the closest, as UCLA's 7:01.03 barely edged LMU's 7:06.83.

  • At the Long Beach Spring Regatta, the novice fours "A" boat finished in 7:53.4 while the "B" boat came home in 8:15.8. The varsity four "A" crew completed the 2000-meter course in 7:53.8, with the "B" vessel crossing the line in 8:09.0. The varsity eight completed the women's day, beating the MAC rowing club by over 30 seconds, 6:55.6 to 7:27.5.

  • LMU will take on USC on March 28 in a tune-up for the San Diego Crew Classic.
  • The Gaels opened the Spring season with two firsts and a second place finish at the Sacramento Invitational.

  • In the Varsity 8 race, Saint Mary's finished second with a time of 6:57.7, the lineup for the boat was cox Marrah Galvin, 8 Sandra Pichelli, 7 Michelle Grima, 6 Johanna Timmer, 5 Jennifer Tyndall, 4 Michelle Burns, 3 Miranda Ripoli, 2 Valerie Vermazen, and 1 Laura Kocourek.

  • In the Varsity-4 race Saint Mary's took first by 17 seconds, finishing with a time of 8:12.2. The lineup for the Varsity-4 was cox Marrah Galvin, stroke Johanna Timmer, 3 Sandra Pichelli, 2 Jennifer Tyndall, and 1 Michelle Grima.

  • In the Varsity-4 "B" race the Gaels did it again, finishing first overall with a time of 8:38.9, finishing two seconds ahead of Sacramento States "A" boat. The lineup for the boat was cox Molly Chow, stroke Elyssa Roselle, 3 Michelle Burns, 2 Laura Kocourek, and 1 Whitney Medved.

  • The Gaels next compete at the Pac-10 Challenge in Redwood Shores, CA on March 28th and 29th.
  • San Diego finished second in last year's WCC Championships, just six points behind first place.

  • The Toreros opened the Spring season with a scrimmage against USC and San Diego State at the Port of Los Angeles.

  • San Diego will officially open the season when it competes at the Pac-10 Challenge in Redwood Shores, CA and the Berg Cup in Newport Beach, CA, both on March 28.
  • The Broncos opened the Spring Season with a dual meet against Sacramento State and at the UC Davis and Sacramento Invitationals.

  • At the UC Davis Invitational, the women had their best finish of the day in the Varsity Four as the Broncos got second place. SCU finished 27.63 seconds behind UC Davis (8:00.24). Santa Clara also earned third place finishes in the Varsity Eight and Novice Eight. In the varsity race, the Broncos finished with a time of 7:41.85. In the novice race, SCU clocked in at 8:22.39.

  • At the Sacramento Invitational, the Broncos had their best finish in the Varsity Lightweight 4. SCU finished second with a time of 9:35.7. Santa Clara also took third in the Novice 8 and the Novice Lightweight 4.

  • The Bronco women return to action on March 26 at the Stanford Lightweight, before traveling to SoCal for the San Diego Crew Classic on April 5-6.
