Men and Women Rowing Teams Prepare for Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The men's and women's rowing squads are gearing up this week for the San Diego Crew Classic starting Saturday, April 1, an event slated as one of the largest spring regattas in the country.  The two-day regatta located on Mission Bay will play host to over 3,500 race participants.  Saturday's race schedule begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday's race schedule will start at 7:30 a.m.
 
The women's rowing team will race all three varsity eight s among two different events.  The women's varsity "A" team will race in the Women's Cal Cup scheduled for 8 a.m. on Saturday morning.  The varsity "B" and "C" teams will race in the Women's JV event scheduled for 9:50 and 10 a.m.
 
The men's rowing team will race one varsity eight squad in the Men's Cal Cup race scheduled for 7:30 a.m.
 
The outcome of Saturday's race will determine what time and lane each team will be placed in for Sunday's final race.  Spectators are encouraged to view the race from Crowne Point Shores where a jumbo-tron and announcers will be available to view the race action. 
 
It has been 20 years since a University of San Diego rowing team has captured the Cal Cup.  As part of the weekend events, the 2 nd annual Torero Rowing Crew Classic Reception will take place Saturday evening at 5:30 p.m. in the Degheri Alumni Center Courtyard on the University of San Diego campus.  The highlight of the night will be the recognition of the 1986 men's and women's teams that won the Cal Cup for the University of San Diego.  Tickets may be purchased through the USD rowing office or can be purchased at the door.  For more information, please call (619) 260-5917. 
 
On Sunday, the Toreros will host a BBQ at the team tent from 10-2 p.m.  The team will gladly accept a $5 donation to off-set the cost of supplies.
