LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's crew team closed out their home schedule with a strong showing against USC on Saturday. The varsity 4 defeated the Trojans by almost seven seconds, and the varsity 8 boat was edged by USC by 1.8 seconds. The Lions now prepare to compete in the WIRA Championships next weekend in Sacramento.
The first race of the day was the George Gordon Cup, awarded to the victorious men's varsity 8. LMU fell to USC by six seconds at the San Diego Crew Classic in early April and was looking to close the gap before their trip to the WIRA Championships next weekend. USC got off the start quicker than LMU and increased its lead to a little over a boat length by the half way point of the race. The Lions then started to battle back in the second half but the deficit proved to be too much for them as USC went on to win by 1.8 seconds.
"It was a tough loss for us. We are gaining speed and getting better every day but it is always hard to lose. We just let them get away from us early and it obviously cost us," says men's varsity coach Brooks Jones.
The second race of the morning featured 3 novice boats- 2 from USC and 1 from LMU. From start to finish the first novice boat from USC dominated the race beating both their second boat and the Lions novice by over 20 seconds.
The last race of the day proved to be the most enjoyable for Lion fans as LMU's varsity 4 pulled off a terrific come from behind win over the Trojans. Much like the two previous races USC got off the line quickly, establishing an early boat length lead. The varsity 4 from LMU would not be deterred and fought to stay within striking distance as the race neared the end. In the last few hundred meters of the race the Lions picked up their stroke race and moved past the USC boat to win by 7 seconds.
The Lions return to action next Saturday at the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma in Sacramento. The LMU women's team finishes up the regular season on Sunday morning, participating in the Miller Cup at Ballona Creek.
