Women's Rowing Captures Gold In Varsity and Novice Four Events

Lake Natoma - The Saint Mary's women's rowing team completed the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships by taking home gold medals in both the varsity and novice four competitions. The novice eights won the petite final for a seventh place finish, the varsity eight posted a fifth place in the petite final, and the second varsity eight posted a fourth place petite final finish.

For the second straight year, the Saint Mary's rowing team captured a gold medal in the varsity four competition at WIRA. The boat, which was steered by senior and 2006 All-WIRA selection Amy Bellman, crossed the finish line in a time of 7:11.5, to defeat second place San Diego by three seconds. The boat order for the varsity four were juniors Lindsay Anderson and Dana Smith and sophomores Brittany Cunningham and Janelle Silva.

Saint Mary's continued its dominance of the four events, by taking home a gold medal in the novice four race, as well. The novice four, which was driven by freshman Amber Oosman, completed the 2K race in a time of 7:20.8. The boat, which was rowed by four freshmen, included Michelle Grima, Johanna Timmer, Sierra Timmer, and Sandra Pichelli. SMC crossed the line eight seconds ahead of Western Washington and 10 seconds ahead of Loyola Marymount.

The novice eight finished in first place in the petite final for a seventh place finish overall. The novice eight, which included coxswain Amber Oosman, Michelle Kodweis, Lizette Gutierrez, Laura Manewitz, Whitney Medved, Jennifer Morrison, Ally Oldfield, Amy Romero and Alex Stemel completed the race in a time of 7:05.8.

The varsity eight posted a fifth place finish in the petite final after pulling a time of 6:48.2. The fifth place finish in the petite final had the Gaels finishing 11th out of 14 schools. The varsity eight was steered by Amy Belleman and rowed by Lindsay Anderson, Michelle Grima, Dana Smith, Sandra Pichelli, Johanna Timmer, Sierra Timmer, Janelle Silva and Brittney Cunningham.

The final competition for the Gaels saw the second varsity eight post a time of 7:00.6 for a fourth place finish in the petite final. Coxswain Kate Shalvoy steered the boat of Allie Busche, Arielle Elia, Kristine Myhre, Linzey Shalvoy, Kyla Tom, Jennifer Tyndall, Sinsie Haro and Alexxa Kilby to a 10th place finish overall in the novice eight competition.
