Women's Rowers Earn All-WIRA Honors

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - Four Gonzaga University women's rowers were named to the All-Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) team after the completion of its annual regatta this past weekend at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Three rowers earned first-team honors while another was named to the second-team. Additionally, head coach Glenn Putyrae was also named the WIRA Coach of the Year. The Bulldogs won titles in both the Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ and placed second in the Second Varsity 8+.

Jessica Kocarnik, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and Joan Aubry all earned first-team All-WIRA honors as they guided the Bulldogs Varsity 8+ to their second WIRA Championship in three years and their second championship of the weekend. On Friday, Gonzaga won its 10th West Coast Conference Championship.

Melissa Refuerzo was named to the All-WIRA second-team after the Bulldogs Second Varsity 8+ took silver in the Grand Final.

Putyrae won his third WIRA Coach of the Year honors after Gonzaga won its third WIRA Varsity 8+ championship in the last six years. Putyrae was also honored as the WIRA Coach of the Year in both 2002 and 2005.

Gonzaga will compete in this weekend's Opening Day Regatta hosted by the University of Washington in Seattle.
