Bulldogs Set for Pacific-10 Championships

May 10, 2007

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing program will enter four boats in this Sunday's Pacific-10 Conference Championships set to take place at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. The Bulldogs will enter boats in the Varsity 8+, Junior Varsity 8+, Novice 8+ and Varsity 4+ races. Gonzaga has had success at Lake Natoma this season. All three 8+ boats earned victories two weekends' ago at the West Coast Conference Championships, while the Varsity 8+ and Novice 8+ took gold the same weekend at the WIRA Championships and the Junior Varsity 8+ captured silver.

The Zag Varsity 8+ is seeded seventh in the 13 team field and is in the same heat as California (#2), Stanford University (#3), Oregon State University (#6), Sacramento State University (#10), and San Diego State University (#11). The top three boats from the heat advance to the Pac-10 Grand Final while the final three boats move on to compete in the Petite Final. Gonzaga finished 10th at last year's Pac-10 Championships and eighth the season before.

Gonzaga's Varsity 8+ will be comprised of Joan Aubry, Kelly Steinhaus, Jessica Kocarnik, Cory Nelson, Hanna McClintock, Katie Atkins, Kelsey Koenig, Nicole Aadland-Lewis and Whitney Engle.

The Bulldogs Junior Varsity 8+ is seeded ninth in the 12 team field. Gonzaga will race in the same heat with UCLA (#1), the University of Washington (#4), Oregon State (#5), UC Davis (#8), and Saint Mary's (#12). The top three boats from both heat races will advance to the Grand Final with the remaining finishers competing in the Petite Final. This will be the first year that Gonzaga has entered a Junior Varsity 8+ boat in the Pac-10 Championships.

The Bulldog Junior Varsity 8+ will consist of Kris Lund, Whitney Patrick, Sierra Tittle, Teagan Towhey, Stephanie Murphy, Julie Smetana, Jana Holcombe, Sophie Bluhm and Heather Jewell.

The Gonzaga Novice 8+ is seeded second in the 12 team field. The Bulldogs will race in the same heat as Washington (#3), Washington State University (#6), UC Davis (#7), San Diego State (#10) and Saint Mary's (#11). Again, the top three boats advance to the Grand Final while the remaining three will race in the Petite Final. Last season, which was the first season Gonzaga entered a Novice 8+ boat in the Pac-10 Championships, it earned the Grand Final victory proving the Bulldogs have one of the best Novice rowing programs in the country.

The Bulldog Novice 8+ boat includes Sarah Rotar, Chelsie Eddings, Alissa Stempson, Sara Hickman, Kari Sulenes, Katherine Krueger, Liz Moore, Samantha Cekovic and Rachel Ross.

Gonzaga's Varsity 4+ is seeded ninth in the nine team field. The Zags will race California (#1), Stanford (#4), Washington State (#5), and Sacramento State (#8). The top two teams from each heat will advance to the Grand Final, while the remaining teams will race in the Petite Final. In 2005, the Bulldogs Varsity 4+ placed fourth at the Pac-10 Championships.

The Zag Varsity 4+ boat will include Sarah Rotar, Chelsie Eddings, Liz Moore, Sara Hickman and Kari Sulenes.
