Strong Finish at Pac-10s

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The LMU crew teams finished the season with a strong showing at the Pac-10 Championships on Sunday at Lake Natoma in Sacramento. The men's varsity 8 placed 5th in the Grand Final, defeating USC, while the women's varsity 8 finished 2nd in the Petite Final.

The men's varsity 8 advanced to the Grand Final based on a 3rd place finish in the heats. The Lions (6:04.70) defeated Washington State (6:10.80) by over six seconds, but fell to Stanford (5:50.80) and Washington (5:56.60).

In the Grand Final, LMU was able to avenge a previous loss to USC this year. LMU led the Trojans from the start and finished in 5th place with a time of 6:05.13. The top four boats in the race (California, Stanford, Washington and Oregon State) are all ranked in the top 20 in the nation.

The members of the men's varsity 8 were Men's Varsity 8 - coxswain Vanessa Garrett, 1- Jim Puccetti, 2- Landon Storaasli, 3- Tim Santy, 4- Warren Anderson, 5- Brannon Wynn, 6- Perkin DiGrazia, 7- Scott Wike and 8- David Cronin.

The women's varsity 8 qualified for the Petite Final after finishing 5th in the heats. The Lions finished behind 4th place Sacramento State, and ahead of 6th place SMU. The Hornets defeated the Lions at the WIRA Championships.

In the Petite Final, the Lions pulled ahead of Sacramento State from the start, and held on to finish ahead of the Hornets and place 2nd. Oregon State won the Petite Final with a time of 6:42.00 while the Lions were three seconds behind at 6:45.19.

The women's varsity 4 placed 2nd in the Petite final. The Lions finished 4th in the heats to advance to the Petite Final, finishing 11 seconds ahead of 5th place San Diego State. The Lions had a 10 second margin over the Aztecs in the final for the 2nd place finish.

The women's second varsity 8 finished 4th in the heats to advance to the Petite Final. The Lions finished almost five seconds faster than San Diego State in the heats, but the Aztecs edged LMU in the final. LMU finished 3rd in the Petite Final, as San Diego State finished 0.16 seconds ahead of the Lions. LMU finished over three seconds ahead of Sacramento State.

Members of the women's second varsity 8 were cox: Mona Sumibcay, 8- Kathryn Maloney, 7- Bettina Messerli, 6- Meggan Brunette, 5- Janelle Brunette, 4- Jen Glassman, 3- Larissa Meltz, 2- Renee Thompson, 1- Courtney Bannerman

The men's varsity 4 competed in the final only. LMU placed 7th behind six Pac-10 schools with a time of 7:05.79.

The lineup for the men's varsity 4 was Cox- Vanessa Garrett, 4- Adam Baker, 3- Mark Stellner, 2- Scott Henderson, 1- Kevin Druffel-Rodriguez.

Two Lion boats also competed in the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships at Lake Natoma on Saturday.

LMU's women's novice 4 had an impressive second place finish, falling to only Stanford in the finals. LMU defeated Saint Mary's (B), Sacramento State, Saint Mary's (A), UCLA and Humboldt State.

The men's varsity 4 placed 3rd in its heat to advance to the finals. LMU finished 6th in the final with a time of 7:00.8.
