LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Senior Liz Stewart was named First Team All-West Region, the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) announced today. The Tustin, CA native sat in the stroke seat in 2006 and led LMU to its first ever WCC Championship. Stewart is the first Lion to earn First Team honors, and is the only First Team selection from outside of the Pac-10.
The 2006 season was a groundbreaking one for the Lions. The team won the WCC Championships on April 29th for the first time ever. After the 2nd varsity 8 and varsity 4 recorded second place finishes, the varsity 8 defeated second place Gonzaga by a boat length to capture the conference title.
The Lions also recorded a second place finish at the WIRA Championships on April 31st, falling to Sacramento State. The team avenged that loss at the Pac-10 Championships, finishing 8th overall. LMU placed highest among non-Pac-10 schools, including Sacramento State and Gonzaga.
Stewart is the first LMU athlete to earn first team All-West Region honors. Former Lion Vanessa Glendenning earned second team honors in 2004 and 2005.
