Five Lions Earn Academic Honors

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Five Lions were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Jill Austin, Amy Guion, Kathryn Holzberger, Kathryn Maloney and Becky Nolan were honored for their accomplishments in the classroom and on the water. All five athletes have cumulative GPAs of 3.5 or higher for their career.

Austin, a junior, has a 3.71 GPA as a Communication Studies major. Sophomore coxswain Guion has a team-high 3.92 ERA and is a Natural Science major. Holzberger is also a Natural Science major and has a 3.61 GPA. Maloney has a 3.54 GPA as a Business Administration major, and Nolan has a 3.69 GPA and is a Biochemistry major.

The following are the requirements to be named a Scholar-Athlete:

  • The student-athlete has met all eligibility rules as defined by her institution
  • The student-athlete was in her 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of eligibility
  • The student-athlete rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75% of the current spring races or racing in a regional conference event.
  • The Head Coach of the student-athletes institution was a member in good standing of the CRCA as of April 1, 2006.

    CRITERIA

  • The student-athlete has had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).

    Austin and Maloney are members of LMU's lightweight 8 boat that will compete at the IRA National championships on May 21-June 2 in Cherry Hill, NJ.
