SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's rower Kelly Steinhaus is one of 30 rowers who received an invitation to participate in the U-23 National Team tryouts this summer. Fellow rower Liz Moore also earned an invitation to the 2007 National Team Freshman Camp this summer.
The U-23 National Team tryouts are from June 4-30. They will begin in Charlottesville, Va., on June 4th on the campus of the University of Virginia before moving to Princeton University in Princeton, N.J. on June 19. The invitees will race at the USRowing National Championships on Mercer Lake in New Jersey from June 21-23 before 10 rowers and one coxswain are selected for the U-23 team.
The U-23 National Camp will be coached by Kevin Sauer of Virginia, Melanie Onufrief of Columbia University and Dave O'Neil of the University of California.
Steinhaus helped the Zag Varsity 8+ earn gold at the Knecht Cup, the NCRC Invitational, the West Coast Conference Championship, Opening Day Regatta, and the WIRA Championships. She was named CRCA All-West Region first-team and All-Academic, along with All-WCC.
The National Team Freshman Camp will be held June 18-24 at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisc. The camp will be run by Badger head coach Bebe Bryans.
Moore helped the Gonzaga Novice 8+ finish the 2007 season undefeated for the second season in a row. The Zags earned victories at the Fawley Cup, Knecht Cup, NCRC Invitational, WCC Championships (in the second varsity 8+ race), WIRA Championships and the Pacific-10 Conference Championship - its second-straight Pac-10 title.
This is the second-straight year Gonzaga has had a freshman invited to the National Team Freshman Camp as Hanna McClintock participated a season ago.
