LMU Well Represented at National Team Camps

July 5, 2006

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Four LMU Rowers have been chosen by US Rowing to train with athletes from throughout the country in hopes of representing the United States on the world stage this summer. All four Lion rowers are competing for spots on the Under-23 National Squad that will compete at the World Championships later in July.

Recent graduate Liz Stewart was selected for the openweight camp being held at the University of California while junior Jill Austin is rowing at the Pocock Rowing Center in Seattle with the lightweight group. Both rowers were instrumental in leading LMU to its first WCC Championship this spring, earning All-WCC and All-WIRA honors. In addition, Stewart was named a second team All-American.

Warren Anderson and Jim Puccetti have headed east. Both graduated from LMU in May after leading the men's varsity 8 to one of its most successful seasons. Anderson was selected to the heavyweight camp in Princeton while Puccetti joins lightweight hopefuls at Rutgers.

The U-23 World Championship Regatta will be held in Hazelwinkel, Belgium from July 20th to 23rd. Information can be found here.

The World Rowing Under 23 Championships are a showcase of up-and-coming athletes who are too old to compete at a junior level but are still in need of further development to rank among top senior elite rowers.

With the annual participation of approximately 40 countries and 600 athletes, the world of rowing is looking forward to watching Under 23 rowers prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
