USF Women's Soccer Secures 1-0 Spring Victory Against Cal

(San Francisco) - USF got a goal from sophomore Alexis Mielke and the Dons defense made it stand up in a 1-0 victory against perennial NCAA power Cal Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons collect their first win of the Spring Season under new head coach Mark Carr.

"It's a big win for us" Carr said. "We defended for 90 minutes tonight and defended as a team. Cal is a great opponent in a strong conference and this is an important step for this program We are all excited about moving forward together."

Sophomore goalkeepers Katie Hodgson and Anika Steig combined for the shutout with each playing a half in goal for USF.

San Francisco returns to action Saturday, April 28 when it competes in the Stanford Kicks Against Breast Cancer Tournament. The Dons open tournament play against at 9:30 AM against Oregon. USF tackles ancient Bay Area and WCC rival Santa Clara at 10:30 AM, before closing the tournament against the host Cardinal at 1:30 PM. All matches will be played at the Stanford Soccer Stadium.
