Moraga, CA - In exhibition action, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Pacific Tigers from Saint Mary's Stadium on Friday night. Pacific scored two goals in the second have to take the victory in the first game of the season for both squads.
Saint Mary's took a 1-0 first half advantage when sophomore forward Jessica Menzhuber scored on a one-timer in the 32nd minute. Following a through pass from Allie Weiner, Menzhuber played a volley past the charging Pacific goalkeeper, Jaime Souza, to give the Gaels the lead in the game.
Saint Mary's held its lead into the second half, until Pacific forward Carla Vellutini evened the score at 1-1 in the 59th minute. Vellutini got to a loose ball behind the Gaels' defense and chipped a shot past the diving Cari Makino at the 59:09 mark. Less than 10 minutes later, UOP took the lead for good when Alysee Valenzuela scored the game-winner at the 68:57 mark.
The game-winning goal was set up when an SMC defender misplayed a pass back to goalkeeper Makino. As Makino was trying to make a play on the ball before it crossed the goal line, Valenzuela beat Makino to the touch and pushed the ball across the line for the goal.
The Gaels recorded five shots with two shots on goal and were led by Weiner's two shots. Freshman goalkeeper Makino played 69 minutes for SMC, allowed two goals and have three saves. Tara Larson played the final 21 minutes in net and collected two saves. Pacific goalkeeper Jaime Souza played all 90 minutes and allowed one goal and had one save.
Saint Mary's will play its first official game of the season on Friday, August 24 when the Gaels travel to California to compete in the California Tournament at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, CA. The Gaels will take on Colorado College at 2 p.m. to open the event. SMC's second game of the tournament will be on Sunday, September 2 when the Gaels battle Columbia at noon.
