PULLMAN, Wash. - Lacey Castleberry's goal in the 61st minute lifted the Gonzaga University women's soccer team to a 2-1 season opening non-conference win over Oregon State University, Friday at the Cougar Classic, hosted by Washington State University in Pullman, Wash.
The Beavers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute when Whitney Goodell caught GU goalkeeper Jessie Thalman out of position to take the early lead.
Gonzaga responded at the 29:18 mark, knotting the game 1-1 when Nanda McCormick scored an unassisted goal after beating OSU goalkeeper Melissa Onstad in a one-on-one situation.
GU earned the come-from-behind victory when Castleberry was able to knock in a deflection by McCormick in front of the goal at the 60:55 mark to score the game winner.
Thalman recorded four saves, picking up the win for the Zags, while her counterpart Onstad also recorded four saves during the loss for the Beavers.
The Bulldogs out-shot Oregon State 17-9, including holding an 8-2 advantage in the second half.
Gonzaga will return to the pitch on Sunday against Washington State in the final game of the Cougar Classic at 2 p.m. in Pullman.
