Berkeley, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team opened its 2007 season with a 2-2 tie against Colorado College Friday afternoon in the California Tournament from Edwards Field. The Gaels scored two first half goals against the 2006 NCAA Tournament participant Tigers.
SMC handled Colorado College in the first half with two goals on seven shots. The Gaels opened the scoring with a tally in the 11th minute.
Just over 10 minutes later the Gaels would add on to their lead. Freshman forward Alex Ciliento recorded her first collegiate goal when she volleyed a Weiner pass into the back of the net from the center of the box.
Saint Mary's would hold onto the 2-0 cushion until the 80th minute when Colorado College finally broke through.
Molly Uyenishi scored on an unassisted strike that found the upper-V on the right side. Five minutes later the Tigers evened the score.
Emily Beans knotted the game at two when she buried a Jessica Beinlich pass that was started off a corner kick.
The Tigers out-shot the Gaels 12-5 in the half while both teams tallied one shot over the two overtime periods. Colorado College out-shot Saint Mary's 17-13 in the contest.
Ciliento led the Gaels with four shots, putting three on goal. Danielle Spann rallied off three shots while Weiner tallied two with a goal and an assist.
Tiffany Brown led all players with five shots for Colorado College, putting two on goal. Beans and Uyenishi tallied three shots a piece.
In net, freshman Cari Makino allowed two goals and made six saves in her collegiate debut for the Gaels. Geneva Sills also allowed two goals and made six saves on the afternoon.
Saint Mary's will continue tournament play against Columbia. The two teams will square off on Sunday, September 2 at Noon at Edwards Field.
