Women Soccer Wins Home Opener

SPOKANE, Wash. - Freshman Taylor Hall knocked in two goals as the Gonzaga University women's soccer team opened it's 2006 home schedule with a 4-0 win over Birmingham-Southern College on Friday afternoon at Martin Field.

With the win, Gonzaga improves to 2-0-1 and remains undefeated for the season.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 21st minute when Sarah Hall connected with a Cristin Leverson pass from five yards out to take the early 1-0 lead.

GU added another goal at the 49:45 mark, when Lacey Castleberry knocked in an open shot from the top of the box for her second goal of the season.

Taylor Hall capped the Bulldogs scoring when she posted two goals within three minutes of each other for her first career goals. The first goal came at 55:49 when she sailed the ball over the finger tips of BSC goalie, Brittany Green. Taylor Hall then scored her second goal of the match at 58:19 off of an assist by Christine Soma.

The Bulldog defense poised a tough opposition to BSC, allowing only one Panther shot during the match, with the lone shot coming late into the second half. Gonzaga posted 11 shots during the match. GU also held the advantage on corner kicks, 6-0.

Gonzaga continues its home stand tomorrow when it faces regional foe Eastern Washington University. The match is scheduled to kickoff at Noon at Martin Field. The match marks the first time since 1997 that the Bulldogs have played back-to-back consecutive games at home.
