SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team extended its home undefeated streak to 10 matches with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Washington University Saturday afternoon at Martin Field.
With the win, GU improves to 3-0-1 including a perfect 2-0-0 record at home. The last time the Zags suffered a loss at home was in 2004. During the past three seasons, Gonzaga has posted a 15-1-1 record at Martin Field.
The Bulldogs got on the board late in the first half when at the 44:01 mark, Nanda McCormick scored her second goal of the season. McCormick blasted in the goal off of a free kick by Beth Drollinger. The ball sailed over the top of the Eastern Washington (0-3-0 overall) defenders before finding the back of the net.
GU's second goal came in the 57th minute when Christine Soma connected with a pass from Laura Zuckerman from near the top of the box. The goal was Soma's first of the season.
Cristin Leverson scored the final goal of the game at the 67:16 mark, with an open net header.
EWU nearly got on the board during the 79th minute when Brittany Sparks nailed a ball that was barely wide, missing the left side of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Jessie Thalman improved to 3-0-1 for GU, including her second career shutout. Eagle goalkeeper Tiera Como fell to 0-3-0 on the season and registered eight saves.
Gonzaga held the shot advantage for the match 19-6, including out shooting Eastern Washington 10-2 in the second half. The Zags also held the advantage on corner kicks, 7-2.
The Bulldogs will return to action Friday when they travel to Tucson, Ariz. for the Four Points Cats' Classic. GU will face host No. 17 Arizona Friday at 7:30 p.m. and will go against Pacific on Sunday at 11 a.m.
