Moraga, CA - On day one of the 2006 SMC Fall Soccer Classic, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores at Garaventa Field. Vanderbilt's Susan McAleavey scored the game-winning goal on a first half penalty kick. With the loss, SMC falls to 1-4 on the year while Vanderbilt improved to 2-1-2 overall.
In a physical game in which the Gaels were whistled for 17 fouls, Vanderbilt scored the only goal of the game on a penalty kick. The penalty kick was awarded when the referee called a foul on SMC in the penalty box 25 minutes into the game. The Commodores' Susan McAleavey put home the free kick, giving Vanderbilt a 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes after the Commodores goal, VU's Katie Schulz was given a red card for violent misconduct. Vanderbilt played the final 55 minutes of the game with 10 players and held onto its advantage for a 1-0 win.
Saint Mary's and Vanderbilt took six shots in the game with the only goal coming on a penalty kick. SMC's Jennifer Zenovich suffered the loss in goal for the Gaels after recording two saves. Vanderbilt's Tyler Griffin earned the shutout win after making one save in goal.
In the first game of the Fall Soccer Classic, the No. 14 ranked California Golden Bears defeated Air Force 3-1. Cal took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute with Bri Wiles scored and unassisted goal. Air Force evened the score in the 39th minute, when Katherine Taylor scored on a shot from 35 yards out. Stephanie Wieger scored Cal's game-winner just 28 seconds after Taylor's goal. An insurance goal was scored by Cal's Julie Schnugg eight minutes into the second half.
Saint Mary's will return to action in the Fall Soccer Classic on Saturday morning when the Gaels play Air Force at 9 a.m. The Fall Soccer Classic will conclude when California and Vanderbilt play at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Both games will be played at SMC's Garaventa Field.
