Los Angeles, CA - Stefanie Baduria recorded a goal and an assist to help lead the LMU women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over St. Francis (PA) in the Lions' first game of the LMU/Four Points Sheraton Culver City Tournament at Sullivan Field this afternoon. Baduria gave LMU a quick lead with a goal in the third minute, and assisted on Tana Smothermon's insurance goal in the 66th minute. LMU remains undefeated on the season and improves to 2-0-2 overall.
Baduria became the first player to score on the Red Flash this season, as St. Francis recorded shutouts in all of its first three games of the season. Whitney Temple's pass found the midfielder 25 yards outside, and she chipped a high, lofting shot that went over the fingertips of SFU goalkeeper Melanie Stockman to give LMU a 1-0 at 2:56.
LMU easily controlled the flow of play in the first half and outshot SFU, 6-2. The Lions also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half.
St. Francis managed more opportunities in the second half, but still could not tie the game. The Lions added an insurance goal in teh 66th minute. Baduria found Smothermon inside the 18 yard box, and the senior captain launched a shot to the right side past a diving Stockman. The goal was Smothermon's second of the season.
The Lions outshot SFU 18-7 for the game, and 12-5 in the second half. St. Francis managed just one shot on goal, and Slovek made the save to record her first shutout of the season.
Harrison led LMU with five shots, and Smothermon added four. Kirsten Hoffsmith had three shots for SFU.
The loss is the first of the season for St. Francis who is now 3-1 overall.
Both teams return to action on Sunday for the final day of the LMU/Four Points Sheraton Culver City Tournament. LMU will host Oklahoma State in the first game at 11:00am, and Cal Poly will take on St. Francis in the tournament finale at 2:00pm. Oklahoma State was a 1-0 winner over Cal Poly in the first game of the day.
