Ohio State Deals USD First Loss of Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 24th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team dropped their first match of the young season, 2-0, to host Ohio State University Sunday morning.

With the loss the Toreros fall to 2-1-1 overall and have recorded a split on their first road trip of the season, as she defeated the University of Dayton this past Friday, 1-0. With the win, the Buckeyes remain undefeated on the season and improve to 5-0-0.

Both teams battled to a scoreless draw in the first half of play with the Toreros having a 9-6 advantage in shot attempts. The Toreros had their chances to score, but were unable to get the ball past the OSU goalkeeper. Amy Epsten had a great scoring opportunity come in the seventh minute of the match, when she fired a rocket shot from the top of the goal box, but the OSU `keeper made a great save to preserve the scoreless contest.

Later in the first half, freshman striker Ashleigh Shoughro had back-to-back opportunities to put the ball into the back of the net, as both in the 10th and 11th minute Shoughro took shots from inside of the box, but the OSU goalkeeper made saves on both shot attempts.

The Buckeyes would then score the only goal they would need in the 61st minute, as Lisa Collison drew out USD's goalkeeper Brittany Cameron, then she slid a pass to teammate Lara Dickenmann who put the ball into the back of the net. Ohio State would added one more goal in the 81st minute, as Alex Burzynski was able to get the ball past Cameron, putting the match at its final of 2-0.

Ohio State out shot the Toreros 15-13 and held a 4-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Cameron was saddled with the loss in goal for the Toreros as she allowed two goals and recorded three saves. Her counterpart, Lauren Robertson was credited with the win for the Buckeyes, as she allowed no goals and recorded seven saves.

Shoughro led the team in shot attempts with four and both Leigh Ann Robinson and Epsten tallied three shots a piece for USD.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they play host to the UCLA Bruins in a 7:30 p.m. match at USD's Torero Stadium. The Toreros will also play host to Cal Poly on Sunday in a 1 p.m. match at Torero Stadium.
