Nashville, TN - In opening round play of the Vanderbilt Tournament, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by UAB at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. UAB's Danya Barsalona scored the game-winning goal in the 49th minute, dropping SMC's overall record to 1-2-2. UAB improved to 4-0-1 on the year.
In a scoreless first half, Saint Mary's controlled the flow of the game and outshot the Blazers 14-5. UAB goalkeeper Kate Blankenship held the Gaels scoreless over the first 45 minute, and collected three first half saves. Saint Mary's goalkeeper Cari Makino, who faces five shots in the first half, did not have to make a save.
UAB struck quickly in the second half when Danya Barsalona struck a shot from 14 yards at the 48.25 mark. Barsalona took a pass from Caitlin Marple and hit a shot over the head of Makino for the games only goal. UAB outshot the Gaels 12-6 in the second half, and Makino ended the second half, and the game, with six saves. Saint Mary's put three of their six second half shots on goal, and Blankenship made three saves to bring her season shutout total to four in five games.
Saint Mary's had five players take more than one shot in the game, and junior midfield Stefani Rocco led the way with four shots, with two on goal. Alex Ciliento, Allie Weiner, and Jessica Menzhuber had three shots each, and Mercede Koning had two attempts.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, when the Gaels take on the tournament host, the Vanderbilt Commodores. The game between SMC and Vandy will kick-off at 1 p.m. Central Time from the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.
