Nashville, Tenn. - Freshmen Ashley Riley and Sheridan Jones of the Gonzaga University women's soccer team both recorded their first career goals Friday as the Bulldogs shutout Vanderbilt University 2-0 at the Vanderbilt Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.
With the win, the Zags improve to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Commodores, who advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, fall to 2-2-1.
The game remained scoreless until Jones scored her first collegiate goal during the 57th minute to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage. After taking a pass from senior Christine Soma, Jones fired a shot from just inside the box that reflected off of goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel's fingers.
Gonzaga added to their lead with Riley's goal at the 66:57 mark when the native of Taos, N.M. recorded her first goal as a Zag. Riley shot the ball from seven yards out after connecting with a rebound from senior Sarah Hall.
The Bulldogs' goalkeeper Jessie Thalman earned the victory as well as her third shutout of the season. The sophomore has now amassed nine career shutouts, listing her second on the Gonzaga career shutout ranks.
Vanderbilt held the shot advantage on the evening, 21-14, yet the Bulldogs held a 10-5 shots on goal advantage. The Commodores also held a 5-3 edge on corner kicks.
Gonzaga will return to action Sunday as it takes on University of Alabama-Birmingham during the final day of the Vanderbilt Tournament. Game time is slated for 9:00 a.m., PST.
