Red Nixon and Jodie Taylor each netted hat tricks as Oregon State defeated Lamar 8-0 on Sunday at the LMU/Four Points Culver City Classic at Sullivan Field in Los Angeles, CA. The Beavers finish the tournament at 2-0 and improve to 5-1-0 on the season while the Cardinals drop to 0-5-0 in 2007.
OSU displayed definitive aerial prowess, scoring four of their goals off headers. Najma Homidi got the Beavers on the board first, heading in a cross from the left from Alison Vislay at 13:12. Oregon State then went down the right, with Jetta Sadusky's cross being met by a powerful header by Nixon to make it 2-0 at 26:20. Taylor scored her first, and OSU's third, three minutes before halftime, slotting home on a breakaway feed by Rachael Axon.
OSU tied LMU's tournament record of five goals in a half in the second stanza. Nixon grabbed her second in the 62nd minute, heading in a corner kick by Courtney Wetzel, and completed the hat trick in the 78th minute with another header, this time from a corner by Taylor.
Taylor got in on the act with two of OSU's three goals in the final ten minutes. In the 82nd minute, she scored on another one-on-one, this time from a pass by Vislay. Taylor had another breakaway three minutes later and was brought down in the area for a penalty. Sadusky stepped up to score for the seventh goal and Taylor finished off her hat trick just ten seconds later.
Ashley Wood and Caitlin Seeley combined on the shutout, with Wood making two saves in the first half. Kelsie Binetti tied the tournament record with 11 saves in goal for the Cardinals.
