Rochester, Mich. (Sept. 17, 2006) - The LMU women's soccer got back on track with a 3-2 win at Oakland this afternoon at the Oakland Soccer Field. Katie Osborne scored two goals, including the game-winner to lead LMU to the road win. Loyola Marymount improves to 4-1-2 and will return to Sullivan Field next weekend to host USC on Sunday.
The Golden Grizzlies (2-6) controlled play early, taking four shots and two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes. Loyola Marymount then swung the momentum in its favor, pressuring Oakland in the box and taking three rapid shots on goal, each of which sophomore goalkeeper Kim Herbst turned aside.
Katie Osborne gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with assistance from Stefanie Baduria, shooting from about 20 feet out and slipping the ball inside the left post. Oakland took two shots late in the half but was unable to convert and the score remained 1-0 at intermission.
The second half began with alternating rushes up the field with both teams shooting on goal and testing the keepers in the first 10 minutes. The Lions' Tiffany Harrison was able to take advantage first, scoring in the 64th minute to put LMU up 2-0, but the Golden Grizzlies came roaring back as junior Kristi Tomczyk received a pass inside the box from freshman Susie Lee and fired a quick shot high into the net to bring Oakland within one 2-1 in the 69th minute.
Osborne netted her second score of the game off a rebound from Jamie Bell to regain the two-goal lead for LMU 3-1 in the 79th minute. Oakland fought back, controlling the ball in the attacking end with junior Kristi Mitchell and Tomczyk putting shots on goal and forcing the Lions' keeper Joslyn Slovek to make some tough saves. Sophomore Jessica Boyle converted on a free kick in the 87th minute to bring the Golden Grizzlies within one 3-2. Oakland made one more rush up the field in the final minute, but was unable to get a shot away and the game ended 3-2 in favor of LMU.
Herbst made 11 saves for the Golden Grizzlies, while Slovek turned aside eight shots for Loyola Marymount.
LMU outshot Oakland 25-20, with Harrison leading the Lions with six shots. Bell had five shots for LMU. Tomczyk led Oakland with six shots.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, hosting USC at Sullivan Field at 1:00pm. The game is the first of a doubleheader with the men's team. LMU will host Portland in men's soccer action on Sunday at 4:00pm.
