Malibu, Calif. - Stretching its unbeaten streak to six, the Pepperdine women's soccer team picked up its second win on the road this weekend as it shut out Arizona State, 1-0, on Sunday evening at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz. With the win, the Waves improved their record to 5-1-2 on the season.
After taking two quick shots, the Sun Devils (4-2-2) controlled the tempo of the game but the ball quickly went in the way of the Waves. After an Emily Wynne shot was saved, Pepperdine pushed forward and at the 16:42 mark, junior McKenzie Hill scored her second goal of the weekend after receiving a pass from Wynne to put the Waves on board.
Arizona State would not remain quiet as it would get off three more shots and take a corner kick as it attempted to equal the score, but Pepperdine answered with three shots and a corner kick of their own before the first period ended with the visiting team still leading 1-0.
The two teams played the ball back and forth early in the second period as senior Lindsey Redlin and Wynne each took two shots before the Sun Devils took control of the ball. Arizona State pressured Pepperdine as it continued to take 8 shots as the clock moved closer to the end of regulation. The Waves stellar defense kept their opponents out of the box as Pepperdine goalkeeper Kayla Stolte earned her second solo shutout as she recorded four saves in the victory.
The Waves took 9 shots, including five shots on goal, as Wynne led the team with three shots, while Redlin added two.
The Waves return home to Malibu on Fri., Sept. 22 for a 3 p.m. match against San Diego State before facing local rival UCLA next Sunday for a 1 p.m. match in Los Angeles, Calif.
