SPOKANE, Wash. - Ashley Riley of the Gonzaga University women's soccer team scored her third goal in as many matches Friday as the Zags defeated Utah State University 2-1 at Martin Field in Spokane.
The victory, which was the Bulldogs' fourth in a row, improved Gonzaga to a 5-2-0 record while Utah State dropped to 3-5-0 on the season.
Riley gave the Zags a 1-0 lead just before halftime when at 41:36, the freshman connected with a pass from Sarah Hall before heading the ball into the net from about 15 yards out. The goal was the third of Riley's career as the freshman posted goals in back-to-back games last weekend and, as a result, was named to this week's Soccer Buzz National Elite Team of the Week.
The score remained 1-0 until the 75th when Jamie Blanche fought off three Aggie defenders to score an unassisted goal.
Utah State avoided the shutout by scoring at 84:49 to bring the score to 2-1. Dana Peart scored the lone Aggie goal of the afternoon when she connected with Alysa Adams to knock the ball into the far right corner of the goal.
Gonzaga held the demanding shot advantage in the match, as the Bulldog defense held the Aggies to seven shots, while GU recorded 16. The Zags also held a 6-2 corner kick edge.
Goalkeeper Jessie Thalman earned her fifth win of the season as she improves to 5-2-0 for the year. Aggie goalkeeper Ali Griffin suffered the loss.
The Zags will take the field again on Friday, Sept. 28 when they host Idaho State University at 3 p.m. at Martin Field.
