IRVINE, Calif. - Junior striker Jen Mello's first Torero goal lifted the 25th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team (4-1-2) to a 2-1 overtime win over UC Irvine (4-2-1) Friday evening in a non-conference match at Anteater Stadium.
With the game tied at 1-1, the Toreros turned to the junior transfer from San Diego State, and she delivered. Just 1:08 into the overtime period, Mello was able to redirect a cross from senior midfielder Leigh Ann Robinson with her head, past the UCI Goalkeeper, Danielle de Seriere, to give USD the victory.
The Toreros wasted no time in scoring as just 2:49 into the match, USD was on the scoreboard. Junior forward Amy Epsten controlled a pas from Ashleigh Shoughro and had a breakaway. Epsten was able to punch the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, and give USD the early momentum.
The Anteaters would even things up in the 73rd minute, as they snapped junior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron's 311:01 scoreless streak. UCI's Nikki Forrest scored from inside the six-yard box on assists from freshman Colleen Lopez and freshman Caty Cope whose corner kick knocked the ball inside the box to Lopez.
Cameron picked up the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded four saves. de Seriere was saddled with the loss for the Anteaters, as she allowed two goals and recorded seven saves.
San Diego dominated the offensive stats as they out shot Irvine 17-5 and also had a 1-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they head to UC Riverside for a 1 p.m. match at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
