(San Francisco, CA) - With less than 15 minutes left in the game, senior forward Chelsea Hunt scored on a breakaway to earn the 2-1 victory over No. 17 Cal State Fullerton. The win for the Dons (4-4-1) is their first over a ranked team since last season's 2-1 victory over then No. 19 Pepperdine. The loss drops the Titans to 4-2-4 on the season.
USF came out of the gate strong, getting on the board first. At the 29:27 mark, junior midfielder Lauren Tweet (2) headed the ball into the right corner of the net. Sophomore defender Jessica Duty was credited with the assist.
Tweet commented on the goal. "I really feel my game has changed and I'm playing really well right now. That was a play we had been working on in practice and it worked out. I'm at full strength and I'm really excited with how the team is playing."
Ten minutes later, Fullerton evened the score at one when junior midfielder Brianna Buffington (2) scored, just putting it passed Don sophomore goalie Katie Hodgson (1-1-1). Titan freshman forward Mandy Puffinberger was credited with the assist off the corner kick. Fullerton had a legitimate scoring chance earlier in the game, when at the 9:25 mark, senior midfielder Lauren Welch knocked a shot into the crossbar, narrowly missing a goal.
In the 77th minute, the Dons would take the lead as Hunt (3), charging with the ball from midfield, beat four Titans and knocked in the ball off the right post and into the open goal.
After the game, Hunt spoke about the team. "We are playing so well and really coming together right now. Tonight we earned a great team win. We are on the rise, and beating a ranked team shows that."
USF held the advantage in both shots (15-11) and corner kicks (8-2). Both USF's Hodgson and Fullerton's senior goal keeper Karen Bardsley had four saves on the night.
Head coach Pamela Kalinoski had this to say about her team, "We battled for 90 minutes and Fullerton just wouldn't go away. Our defense and offense came together so well tonight and this was just an amazing team win. Tweet has been working on that play in practice and it paid off and Hunt is just getting better and better every game. Hodgson and Kara Breithaupt had great games as well."
The Dons return to action on Sunday, September 24, meeting the No. 19 Cal Bears in Berkeley. Game time is set for 3:30 PM.
