Moraga, CA - Alex Ciliento scored the game-winning goal 5:35 into the first overtime period to give the Saint Mary's women's soccer team a 1-0 win over the Valparaiso Crusaders on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium The win improves the Gaels' record to 4-2-2 overall while Valpo falls to 5-4 on the season.
The goal for Ciliento is her fourth of the season and came off a corner kick from Allie Weiner. The cross by Weiner came from the left corner and was deflected by Jessica Menzhuber to the waiting feet of Ciliento. Ciliento collected the ball, set her feet and fired a shot through the Valpo defense and past goalkeeper Erin Murray.
The game-winning goal for Ciliento was the second of the season for the freshman forward, and her second overtime goal of the year. The win marks the third straight for the Gaels, giving SMC its longest winning streak since posting three straight victories early in the 2005 season.
Saint Mary's goalkeeper Tara Larson recorded her third win and second shutout of the season. Larson, who had three saves against the Crusaders, recorded her second straight shutout following a 2-0 blanking of Sacramento State on Friday.
Saint Mary's out shot Valpo 9-6, but the Crusaders bettered the Gaels in corner kicks 3-2.Valpo goalkeeper Erin Murray made two saves.
Saint Mary's will return to action when the Gaels travel to Berkeley on September 28 to take on the 19th-ranked California Golden Bears. The game between SMC and Cal will kick off 4 p.m. from Edwards Stadium.
