Toreros Cruise Past UCR, 3-1

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The 25th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team cruised to a 3-1 win over host UC Riverside Sunday afternoon, 3-1, in a non-conference match at the UCR Soccer Stadium.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 5-1-2 overall, have now won their third consecutive match and haven't lost a match in their last four outings. With the loss, the Highlanders saw their three-game winning streak come to an end as they fall to 5-3-0.

Once again, the Toreros wasted no time in scoring as in the sixth minute of the match, junior striker Amy Epsten controlled a pass from senior defender Vanessa Vella and punched the ball into the back of the net to give USD an early 1-0 lead.

The Highlanders then found themselves back on even playing terms with the Toreros, as in the 27th minute of the match, Tessa Lennala was able to sneak one past USD's junior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron.

Junior forward Jen Mello then recorded her second game-winning goal in as many matches. In the 57th minute with the score was knotted at 1-1, Mello corralled a pass from sophomore Natalie Vinti and put a one-timer past the UCR goalkeeper to give USD the final goal they would need.

The Toreros weren't done scoring just yet as freshman striker Ashleigh Shoughro would put the match out of reach in the 82nd minute. Shoughro was able to control a pass from senior midfielder Leigh Ann Robinson and punched the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the season, which put the match at its final of 3-1.

San Diego again dominated the offensive stats as they out shot the Highlanders 15-6 and the two teams were even on corner kicks at three apiece.

Cameron was credited with the win in goal for the Toreros as she allowed one goal and recorded four saves. Her countrerpart, Deanna Borgelt, was saddled with the loss in goal for UCR, as she allowed three goals and recorded seven saves.

The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they host the Cal State Northridge Matadors in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at USD's Torero Stadium.
