USF Women's Soccer Falls to No. 13 Cal, 4-0

(Berkeley, CA.) - No. 13 California capitalized on goals from fourdifferent players in the second half to secure a 4-0 shutout of SanFrancisco Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 7-1-2, while the Dons fell to 4-5-1.

After a scoreless first half, Cal senior forward Katie Ratican scored in the 47th minute. Ratican streaked down the right flank and sent a 30-yard shot just under the cross bar. Junior midfielder Laurie Gartrell extended Cal's margin to 2-0 in the 53rd minute when she received a pass inside the penalty box from fellow midfielder Caitlin Hannegan and sent a shot off the far post and into the goal.

Junior reserve forward Bri Wiles gave the Bears a 3-0 edge in the 78thminute with a tap-in from about four yards. Senior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami and junior forward Stephanie Wieger were credited with the assists on the goal. Wieger, solidified the victory with a goal with under three minutes to play. Sophomore forward Valerie Barnes fed Wieger inside the 18-yard box, and Wieger slid on the ground to get the ball past USF goalkeeper Katie Hodgson, who came far off her line to contest theshot.

Cal held a commanding 19-4 shot advantage in the game, including an 11-1edge in shots on goal. Senior forward Chelsea Hunt, who led USF with two shots, posted the Dons only shot in the first half.

Hodgson grabbed six saves for the Dons, and Bears goalie Anna Key tallied one save togive the Bears their seventh shutout of the season.

USF returns to action against Pacific, Tuesday, September 26 at Negoesco Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:00 PM.
