SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Leigh Ann Robinson and Ashley Kirk each tallied two goals to lift the University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 4-2 win over the University of Hawaii Sunday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros improve to 8-4-0 overall and move to 6-1-0 on their home pitch. With the loss, the Rainbow Wahnie fall to 6-4-2 overall.
USD jumped out to an early lead as in the second minute of the match Tara Hodgson sent a through ball behind the defensive back line of Hawaii and Robinson went with the ball on a breakaway. Robinson then punched the ball past the Hawaii goalkeeper for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Hawaii scored the equalizer in the 35th minute of the match when Taryn Fukuroku headed a cross from Alexis Choi past USD starting goalkeeper Karen Cook.
Shortly before the end of the first half of play, Hawaii was able to sneak in a second goal to take a 2-1 lead. At the 44:32 mark of the match, Fukuroku tallied her second goal of the evening as she scored from 15 yards out.
In the second half, the Toreros went on an offensive attack and in the 51st minute of the match San Diego was again on even playing terms with Hawaii. Vanessa Vella took a corner kick for the Toreros and placed the ball to the right side of the goal box, where Kirk was there to put the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
16 minutes later, the Toreros again found themselves with the lead as Kirk netted her second goal of the evening. Vella again took a corner kick for the Toreros and Kirk was there to redirect the ball with her head past the Hawaii goalkeeper for the 3-2 lead.
USD wasn't done yet, as Robinson put the match out of reach with her second goal of the evening. Allison Wolters took a throw in for the Toreros on the left side of the field. The ball was thrown directly to Robinson who then drilled the ball over the head of the Hawaii goalkeeper to put the match at its final of 4-2.
USD's Brittany Cameron was credited with the win in the goal for the Toreros after coming in for the Toreros in the second half and not allowing any goals. Kori Lu was charged with the loss for Hawaii allowing four goals and recording five saves.
The Toreros out shot the Rainbow Wahnie 14-6 including an 8-1 advantage in the second half. USD also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they open West Coast Conference play against Santa Clara on the road in a 1 p.m. match.
