TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman striker Ashleigh Shoughro's goal in the 88th minute of the match lifted the 19th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 win over host Arizona State University Sunday evening in USD's final West Coast Conference tune-up at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.
With the win the Toreros run their unbeaten streak to eight as they improve to 9-1-2 overall. With the loss, the Sun Devils fall to 6-5-0 overall.
With the match winding down and both teams trying to break the scoreless contest to capture a win, the Toreros once again turned to their freshman forward, and she delivered her second game-winning goal in as many games. Shoughro found herself in the right place at the right time, as a ball was deflected off the ASU goalkeeper, and Shoughro was there to punch the ball into the back of the net to give USD the win.
Both teams had their chances to get a goal with USD's best scoring opportunity coming in the 20th minute of the match when junior forward Amy Epsten fired off a shot that was saved by the ASU goalkeeper.
The Sun Devils also had several opportunities to tally a goal as in the 15th minute of the match Alexandra Elston fired off a shot, but to no avail as USD's junior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron was there to record the save and preserve the scoreless contest.
Cameron picked up the win in goal for the Toreros posting her sixth shutout of the season as she allowed no goals and recorded a season-best eight saves. Her counterpart, Briana Silvestri, was saddled with the loss for the Sun Devils, as she allowed one goal and recorded one save.
The Sun Devils out shot the Toreros 19-6 and also held a territorial advantage in corner kicks at 6-5.
The Toreros will return to action on Sunday as they begin West Coast Conference action against No. 2 Santa Clara University at USD's Torero Stadium at 1 p.m.
