Moraga, CA - In the conference opener for both teams, San Francisco fell to Bay Area rival Saint Mary's 4-1 on Sunday afternoon. The loss to the Gaels (3-8-2, 1-0 WCC) dropped the Dons to 4-9-1, (0-1 WCC) on the season.
Saint Mary's came out of the gate fast, scoring six seconds after the opening whistle. Freshman midfielder Jessica Menzhuber took a back pass from sophomore forward Nikki Schrey and hit a shot over the head of Dons sophomore goalie Katie Hodgson. The shot carried over Hodgson and after one bounce found the back of the net.
The Gaels took a 2-0 lead in the 12th minute when freshman midfielder Allie Weiner went one-on-one with Hodgson and put the ball through from 12 yards out. Sophomore midfielders Mika Matsui and Danielle Spann were credited with the assists. In making it 3-0, Schrey punched through her first goal of the afternoon in the 20th minute, heading in a cross from freshman midfielder Ashley Dernbach, who had received from sophomore midfielder Stefani Rocco.
Just under ten minutes into the second half, USF's freshman midfielder Jenny Jarvie earned her second goal of the year, a shot into the left corner off a cross from senior forward Chelsea Hunt. But the Gaels would solidify the win 20 minutes later when at 72:36, Schrey would add her second goal of the day, shooting the ball into an open net off senior midfielder Joelle Gizzi's corner kick.
SMC had the slim advantage in shots (15-12) and corner kicks (2-1).
USF returns to WCC action Friday, October 13 against Portland on the road. The match is set to begin at 7:00 PM.
