MALIBU, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, in double overtime by Pepperdine University in a West Coast Conference match Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Toreros fall to 8-6-0 overall and move to 0-2-0 in WCC play. With the win, the Waves improve to 7-4-3 overall and move to 1-1-0 in WCC action.
The Toreros struck first as in the 30th minute of the match Hallie Huston tallied her third goal of the season. Huston corralled a cross from Leigh Ann Robinson and Allison Wolters and hit a laser strike from eight yards out that flew into the back of the net to give USD the early advantage.
Pepperdine responded shortly into the second half of play as in the 49th minute of the match, Ashley Copp scored an unassisted goal, her first of the season, and USD was again tied with Pepperdine at 1-1.
The Waves and Toreros then battled through the remainder of regulation and through one scoreless overtime period before Pepperdine was able to score a golden goal in the 108th minute of play. Amanda Rupp scored the game-winner from eight yards out into an open net to give the Waves the win.
The Toreros were outshot by Pepperdine 15-12 and the teams were even in corner kicks at five apiece.
Karen Cook took the loss in goal for the Toreros allowing two goals and recording three saves. Her counterpart, Kayla Stolte, was credited with the win for Pepperdine allowing one goal and recording five saves.
The Toreros will look to return to their winning ways on Sunday with a 1 p.m. WCC match against No. 21 Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.
