PORTLAND, Ore. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 8 University of Portland Saturday as the Zags opened West Coast Conference play at Merlo Field in Portland.
The loss drops the Bulldogs to 8-4-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play. The Pilots improve to 9-3-0, 1-0-0 in WCC play with the victory.
Portland jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 17:00 when Kendra Chandhoke tallied a goal from eight yards out that landed in the lower right corner. Angie Woznuk and Sophore Schmidt assisted on the goal.
Gonzaga tied the game 1-1 during the 60th minute when Christine Soma recorded her third goal of the season. Soma connected with a pass from Kelcey Goddard six yards out before knocking it into the lower right corner.
Two goals by the Pilots within six minutes of each other made the difference in the match. The game winning goal was scored by Woznuk off of a penalty kick at 72:04. Portland's third goal was posted at 78:18 Michelle Enyeart scored an open net goal.
The Bulldogs' goalkeeper Jessie Thalman posted five saves while suffering the loss. Portland's Hailee DeYoung earned the victory, posting one save.
The Pilots held the advantage on the evening for both shots and corner kicks. Portland held a 19-3 shot advantage and a 7-1 corner kick advantage.
The Bulldogs will return to the field next weekend when they travel to the Bay Area to face WCC foes University of San Francisco and Saint Mary's College.
