San Francisco, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team opened West Coast Conference on Sunday with a 2-1 road loss to the San Francisco Dons from Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (1-8-3, 1-0-0 WCC) out-shot the Gaels (6-5-2, 0-1-0 WCC) 16-6 in the contest.
USF pressured the Saint Mary's defense from the start and finally broke through at 36:49 as Katie Hoban shook a pair of defenders and rifled a shot through the keeper's hands from 25 yards out, staking the Dons to a 1-0 lead. San Francisco owned a 10-2 shots lead in the opening half and did not allow a shot by the Gaels until the 38th minute.
After the intermission, USF continued to play aggressively and it paid off once again in at 48:47 when Maris tapped the ball into the back of the net from point blank range off two rebounds. It was the first career game-winner for Maris and the first for the Dons this season.
Saint Mary's ended the San Francisco shutout bid late in the second half. Sophomore forward Allie Weiner got on the board with her fifth goal of the season off a beautiful feed from 30 yards out from junior defender Mallory Lee at 83:16.
Hodgson (1-7-3) got the win for the Dons, collecting two saves in the process, while facing just six shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Tara Larson (4-4-1) suffered the loss for Saint Mary's and made nine saves on the afternoon. Junior midfielder Danielle Spann fired three shots to lead the Gaels.
Saint Mary's returns to WCC action when it hosts Portland Friday, October 19. Kick off against the nationally ranked Pilots is set for 3:00 PM at Saint Mary's Stadium.
