Box Score

Los Angeles, CA - San Diego scored two second half goals and held off a furious LMU comeback to defeat the #21 Lions, 2-1 in West Coast Conference women's soccer action this afternoon. The Toreros took a 2-0 lead in the 70th minute, but LMU battled back to cut the lead to one goal on a Katie Osborne header in the 84th minute. The Lions pressured the Torero defense in the final six minutes of the contest but came up just short. LMU drops just its second game of the season to fall to 7-2-4, 0-1-2 in WCC action.

The first half was sluggish and played mostly in the midfield, as each team managed just three shots apiece. In the second half, both offenses finally started clicking. USD (9-6, 1-2) scored the game's first goal of the game in the 56th minute. Leigh Ann Robinson found Veronica Ambort just inside the six yard box and Ambort touched the ball past LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovek to give USD the 1-0 lead.

The Toreros added what would eventually be the game-winner in the 70th minute. Robinson streaked down the right side of the field and crossed the ball to the far post where she found Tara Hodgson waiting. Hodgson headed the ball in the goal to put San Diego ahead 2-0.

LMU cut the lead to one goal in the 84th minute of the game. Tana Smothermon crossed a perfect ball to the far post where Osborne was waiting with a crowd of players. The 5-2 junior flicked the ball with her head into the goal to make it a one goal game.

The Lions pressured the Toreros in the final minutes, but were unable to get the tying goal. The Lions outshot San Diego 14-9, with a 6-5 shots on goal advantage. Osborne led the team with three shots, while four different players had two shots for the Toreros. Slovek made three saves on the day, and USD's Karen Cook made five stops to record the win.

LMU will return to action next weekend on the road in the Bay Area as they will face San Francisco on Friday night and Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
