Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's soccer team dropped a West Coast Conference game to the No. 7 ranked Portland Pilots, 1-0, on Friday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Portland's Stephanie Lopez scored on a free kick with 7:30 remaining in the game. The loss drops the Gaels' record to 6-6-2 overall and 0-2-0 in WCC action. The Pilots improve to 10-3-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play.
The Saint Mary's women's soccer team battled the No. 7 team in the county, before allowing the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute. The Gaels stalled every threatening opportunity that Portland had, but could not come up with one final stop.
At 82:30, Stephanie Lopez took a free kick from 22 yards out. Lopez hit a left-footed shot that bent it around the Saint Mary's wall. The perfectly placed shot finished inside the far post, just out of the reach Saint Mary's goalkeeper Tara Larson. Larson made key stops all game, and made seven saves against 13 shots by the Pilots.
Portland's Lopez, Sophie Schmidt, and Keelin Winters took three shots each. Portland goalkeeper Hailee DeYoung earned the win and the shutout but did not have to make a save in the game.
Saint Mary's will return to WCC action on Sunday when the Gaels host the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 1 p.m. at Saint Mary's Stadium.
