Moraga, CA - The Gonzaga Bulldogs scored a goal in each half to post a 2-0 West Coast Conference win over the Saint Mary's women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. The Gaels are now 6-7-2 overall and 0-3-0 in WCC play, while Gonzaga improves to 9-5-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference action.
Gonzaga took an early lead when Ashley Riley scored her fourth goal of the season. Riley was in the right place at the right time, when she collected a rebound following a save by SMC goalkeeper Tara Larson on a shot by Jamie Blanche. Larson dove to make a save on Blanche's shot from 12 yards out, and when the ball came off the hands of Larson, Riley was standing alone at the top of the six and easily made her shot into the open net.
Gonzaga held its 1-0 lead through intermission and for 63 minutes before adding a second goal. At 69:55, Blanche scored the same way Riley did earlier. After Sheridan Jones' shot from 10 yards out was saved by Larson, Riley, who was trailing the play, collected the rebound, and scored the Bulldogs' second goal of the game, and her fourth of the season. Riley finished the game with three points, which included one goal and one assist.
Gonzaga goalkeeper Lauren Ames earned her first victory and first shutout of the season as she made two saves. Gonzaga outshot the Gaels 14-8 and head a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks.
Of the eight shots by the Gaels, only Danielle Spann was able to take more than one shot. Spann had two shots to lead the Gaels, while GU's Sheridan led all players with five shots in the game. Blanche and Riley had two shots, and Lauren Zuckerman also had two attempts for the Bulldogs.
Saint Mary's will return to West Coast Conference play on Friday, October 26 when the Gaels travel to play the Loyola Marymount Lions at 3 p.m.
