Los Angeles, CA - Jamie Bell scored twice to lead the #24 Loyola Marymount women's soccer team to a 4-1 win over Utah Valley State in non-conference action this afternoon at Sullivan Field. Bell now has seven goals for the season, fifth in LMU single season history. The Lions improves to 9-2-5 on the year and will head to Gonzaga for a WCC showdown on Sunday.
After controlling play in the first 10 minutes, Bell gave the Lions an early lead in the 10th minute. Katie Osborne got the ball deep in the corner, and launched a perfect cross to the waiting forward who knocked it in from close range. The Lions added a second goal from almost the same place. After LMU was fouled in the right corner of the UVSC side of field, Michelle Kanama sent a free kick to the back post. Birthday girl Lauren Shanklin managed to get a foot on the ball and get it past Kelley Thompson to put LMU ahead 2-0 in the 33rd minute.
The Wolverines cut the lead to one early in the second half. Courtney Robbins launched a shot from 25 yards out that beat LMU goalkeeper Joslyn Slovk to make it a one goal game in the 47th minute. But the Lions answered right back, regaining the two goal lead just 70 seconds later. Amanda Lernor sent a perfect ball up the field to Bell, who beat her defender and had a one-on-one opportunity with the new UVSC goalkeeper Tasha Bell. LMU's Bell took the ball to UVSC's Bell, and slipped the ball under the keeper's reach to give LMU a 3-1 advantage.
Five minutes later, the Lions made it a three goal advantage. Lacey Bartels was fouled at the top of the box, earning a penalty kick. The freshman midfielder calmly lined up to take the shot and put it past Bell to make it a 4-1 game.
For the game, LMU outshot Utah Valley State 15-7, but 12 of the Lion shots were on goal. Thompson made three saves in the first half in goal, and Bell made five stops in the second half. Slovek made one save in 56 minutes of action, and Allyssa Clark made one stop in her 33 minutes of play.
Bell's two goals gives her seven for the season, and puts her in a tie for fifth place all time in the LMU single season lists. Her 15 points also moves her into eighth place in the single season points chart.
The Lions now head to the Northwest for a Sunday showdown with Gonzaga. The Bulldogs sit one place ahead of the Lions in the WCC standings, and with two games to play, the Lions are looking for a strong result to stay alive in postseason contention.
