Santa Barbara, CA - Kira Copinga scored her second goal of the season to help the Saint Mary's women's soccer team post a 1-1 tie with UC Santa Barbara in a non-conference game in Thursday night. The tie for SMC gives the Gaels a 3-11-4 overall record and UCSB has a 6-6-6 overall record.
After the teams played to a scoreless first half, Saint Mary's got on the scoreboard first when Copinga scored for the second time this season. Copinga's goal came in the 69th minute off a pass from Nikki Schrey. Copinga took the pass from Schrey and hit a one-timer past UCSB goalkeeper Tammy Lenham.
It looked like the Gaels would hold on for the win, but the Gauchos scored the game-tying goal at 87:04 when Genelle Ives scored her six goal of the season. Chandi Bickford, who dribbled past a Saint Mary's defender then laid off a pass to Ives for the goal, set up Ives goal.
The Gauchos out shot the Gaels 27 to nine but managed only six shots on goal. Saint Mary's goalkeeper Jennifer Zenovich had five saves on the night, while Lenman had two saves for UCSB. The Gaels had nine total shots with three shots on goal.
Saint Mary's will return to West Coast Conference action on Sunday when the Gaels play at San Diego. The game between SMC and the Toreros will kickoff at noon from Torero Stadium.
