SPOKANE, Wash. - Junior midfielder Jackie Garcia's first goal of the season lifted the 11th-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 double overtime win over Gonzaga University Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Martin Field.
In the 101st minute of action, USD took a corner kick and the ball flew into a crowded goal box where, Vanessa Vella fed the ball Garcia, who in turn rocketed off a shot into the back of the net to give USD the win.
In a scoreless first half, USD wasn't without their scoring opportunities. Late in the first half, there was a flurry of offensive activity, that gave USD several opportunities to score a goal. Off a corner kick, junior forward Amy Epsten took control of the ball near the top of the goal box and rifled off a shot that was deflected and sent to Jen Mello who slid into a scramble in front of the net and had her shot dove on by the GU goalkeeper to record the save and preserve the scoreless contest.
Again in the second half, USD dominated the time of possession, but was unable to score a goal. Late in the period, the Toreros had a corner kick and the ball bounced around a bit in front of the Zags' goal, but USD was unable to come away with a goal after several shot attempts.
USD out shot the Zags 16-9, but Gonzaga held an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron picked up her eighth shutout in goal for the Toreros as she allowed no goals and recorded three saves. Lauren Ames was saddled with the loss for Gonzaga as she allowed one goal and recorded eight saves.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head to Moraga, Calif. For a 3 p.m. match against Saint Mary's College.
