SPOKANE, Wash. - The Gonzaga University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 double overtime decision to No. 11 University of San Diego Sunday during West Coast Conference play at Martin Field in Spokane, Wash.
The Bulldogs, who were looking for their second consecutive upset over a nationally-ranked team, dropped to 10-6-1 overall, 2-3-0 in league play with the loss. Friday, the Zags posted a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Santa Clara University. The Toreros improved to 12-2-3 overall, 3-1-1 in league play with the victory.
The match remained scoreless through regulation and the first overtime period. USD's Jackie Garcia decided the match at 101:27 when posted the game winning goal. Following a Torero corner kick, the ball ricocheted around in front of the net before Vanessa Vella tapped the ball to Garcia to end the match.
Both teams fought hard through out the match, as the Toreros held the shot advantage, 16-9 and the Zags held the corner kick edge 8-7. The only period that Gonzaga out shot San Diego was the second half, in which the Bulldogs held the 7-5 advantage.
Gonzaga freshman goalkeeper Lauren Ames suffered the first loss of her career after allowing one goal while posting eight saves. Ames' record this season now stands at 2-1-0. San Diego goalkeeper Brittany Cameron earned the win, improving her record to 10-2-3.
The Zags will hit the field again next Saturday, when they travel to Los Angeles for their final road trip of the season. Saturday, Gonzaga will continue WCC play with a 1 p.m. contest at Loyola Marymount University. The Bulldogs will then take a break from conference action to face Cal State Bakersfield Sunday at 1 p.m.
