SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Freshman Christine Mock tallies two goals and both Veronica Ambort and Marina Heberer each tally one goal as the University of San Diego women's soccer team crushed the Gaels of Saint Mary's College, 4-0, Sunday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at Torero Stadium.
With the win, the Toreros move to 11-8-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the WCC and keep their hopes of making their return to the NCAA postseason alive. With the loss, the Gaels fall to 3-12-4 overall and move to 1-4-1 in the WCC.
On senior day, Ambort left Torero Stadium with a bang as she score the game-winning goal early on as at the 6:17 mark of the match, Allison Walters sent a pass to Leigh Ann Robinson, who in turn fed the ball to Ambort, who was there to punch the back into the back of the net for her sixth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
69 minutes later the Toreros added to their lead as in the 75th minute of the match, Mock tallied her first of two goals on the day. Off a corner kick, Vanessa Vella skied a pass into the goal box and Mock was there to redirect the ball with her head past the SMC goalkeeper pushing the lead to 2-0.
Mock wasn't done yet as seven minutes later she put the game out of reach. Vella took a free kick for the Toreros and the ball again found the head of Mock who snuck the ball past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the match.
Just 50 second later the Toreros put an exclamation mark on the match as Heberer recorded her first collegiate goal. Allison Walters battled through two defenders, and took a shot, but the ball bounced off the `keeper and slowly started to roll towards a wide-open net. Heberer then almost dribbled the ball into the net to give USD the four-goal lead.
The Toreros will return to the pitch on Saturday as they head to the Bay Area for a 1 p.m. showdown with the San Francisco Dons. This will be USD's last effort to prove to the NCAA selection committee that they belong in the NCAA Tournament.
