Moraga, CA- In an emotional season finale, the Saint Mary's women's soccer team gave No.4-ranked Santa Clara a late scare, but fell by the score of 2-1 Saturday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. SMC sophomore midfielder Stefani Rocco tallied the lone goal for the Gaels. After the day, Saint Mary's bids farewell to three seniors and finished the season 3-13-4 overall and 1-5-1 in West Coast Conference play.
Down 2-0 and after consistent pressure on the Broncos defensive half, the Gaels finally broke through. Rocco collected a senior McKenna Belzer pass and from 30-yards out blasted the net in the upper left corner past SCU goalkeeper Julie Ryder in the 74th minute.
The Broncos recorded an early goal on a penalty kick in the 16th minute. Marian Dalmy capped off the attempt slipping the shot on the left side for the goal.
Santa Clara then tallied what proved to be the game-winner in the 65th minute. Hayley Siegel took possession of a loose ball and found room in the left side of the 18-yard box. Siegal bent a right-foot shot around Jennifer Zenovich in the upper right corner for the tally.
SCU was led by Jordan Angeli's seven shots. Amanda Poach followed with three shots, placing two on frame.
In between the pipes, Ryder recorded the victory after making two saves and allowing one goal. Zenovich tallied a game-high six saves and allowed two goals on the afternoon.
SMC seniors Churchill, Belzer and Joelle Gizzi played in their final match in a Saint Mary's uniform. For Churchill, the appearance marked her 80th of her career, which is a new all-time record in the career annals.
With the assist in her final game as a Gael, Belzer finishes the season tied for the team-high with four. She tallied six points on the year with a goal. Gizzi also handed out four assists in her final season as a Gael.
