LONG BEACH, Calif. - The LMU women's soccer battled Long Beach State in a tightly contested spring match on Tuesday, earning a 1-1 draw with the 49ers in rainy conditions. Michelle Kanama gave LMU a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, but the 49ers converted on a penalty kick in the second half for the tie.
LMU opened the scoring in the 30th minute when Jamie Bell took a well placed corner kick for the Lions. Lacey Bartels dummied the ball, allowing it to run by her while drawing the defense to her, for Kanama to bury right footed into the top of the net from 10 yards out. The half finished 1-0 to the Lions.
LMU continued to push for the second goal in the second half, coming close on several occasions. They were unfortunate not earn a penalty kick as Stefanie Baduria, playing in her first game this spring, received a ball in the box with a wonderful first touch and was brought down by a Beach defender but play was allowed to continue.
Just less than 5 minutes later the 49ers were awarded a penalty kick for an incidental hand ball in the box. The 49ers calmly finished what was their only dangerous opportunity in the second half and knotted the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute. The Lion defenders and goalkeeper Allyssa Clark did well in the final 10 minutes to keep the home team frustrated as the game ended tied 1-1.
The Lions are in action again this Saturday at 3:00 at Sullivan Field as they take on the University of Arizona, and Sunday at 10:00am vs. the Alumni.
