LOS ANGELES, Calif. - LMU women's soccer battled to a 2-2 tie with the University of Arizona on Saturday before rallying for a 3-0 win over the Alumni on Sunday. Jamie Bell and Tiffany Harrison scored against the Wildcats, and Eugenia Miranda recorded her first shutout over the Alumni.
Satuday's game against Arizona was a battle at Sullivan Field. The first half was played at a furious pace and saw all four goals scored in a 20 minute span. The Lions opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Bell made a strong run at the Arizona defense, and then lofted a perfectly placed ball over the goalkeeper from 18yds out.
Arizona battled back and tied the score four minutes later as the Wildcats played a long ball in behind the defense for a first time finish that Allyssa Clark just couldn't get to. LMU took the lead back 10 minutes later as Katrina Chong played a perfect corner kick into the box and Lion midfielder Harrison rose above the crowd to power her header by the Wildcat goalkeeper. Unfortunately the lead only lasted four minutes as Arizona scored its second goal in the same manner as their first.
On Sunday, the Lions took on the LMU Alumni. The Alumni came to play and continually frustrated the young Lions throughout the first half, while Lion goalkeeper Eugenia Miranda, earning her first start in goal as a Lion, kept the score 0-0 at the half. The young Lions found their attacking stride in the second half and were able to get in behind the alums to score 3 goals. LMU got two from Michelle Kanama and one from Katie Osborne, while Miranda and the Lion defense were able to stifle the Alumni attack for the second 45 minutes and earn the Lions' first shutout of the spring season.
The Lion coaching staff and players would like to recognize and thank each of the alumni for their participation in the game this weekend.
