PORTLAND, Ore. --- Eight former University of Portland Pilot women's soccer players have been named to opening day rosters for the 2011 Women's Professional Soccer league. The six-team league's rosters were released on Thursday and featured a maximum of 24 players per roster. Four Pilots will compete with the Boston Breakers, while magicJack, Philadelphia Independence, Sky Blue FC and Western New York Flash each have one Portland representative.
Boston features WPS veterans Stephanie Cox and Kelsey Davis, in addition to rookies Elli Reed and Keelin Winters. Cox has been a consistent member of the U.S. Women's National Team as a defender, while Davis was injured and did not compete in the league last year after opening the year on Chicago's roster. Reed and Winters earned All-America honors for Portland last season.
Canadian National Team defender and 2010 NCAA All-America midfielder Sophie Schmidt will make her professional debut for magicJack (Washington DC). U.S. National Team forward and former Pilot All-America midfielder Megan Rapinoe takes her talents to the Philadelphia Independence this season, while former three-time collegiate national player of the year and Canadian National Team star Christine Sinclair joins the Western New York Flash. Angie Kerr (nee Woznuk), a former Pilot All-America midfielder, makes the move to Sky Blue FC (New Jersey) in 2011.
