May 15, 2007

Moraga, CA - Saint Mary's head women's soccer coach Kelly Lindsey announced the signing of six players for the upcoming 2007 season. The Gaels have signed Caitlin Wallace (Irvine, CA), Bree Villar (Anchorage, AK), Chloe Johnson (Santa Barbara, CA), Mercede Koning (Layton, UT), Alexandra Ciliento (Scottsdale, AZ), and Megan Maldonado (Draper, UT) for the 2007 campaign.

"As we finalize our 2007 class, my staff and I are extremely excited about the season ahead," said second-year head coach Kelly Lindsey. "We searched the West Coast for players with personality, versatility, and a blue-collar work ethic that would compete day in and day out to help take us to the next level. I think we found a great mix of all of the above. These young women will add a spark to the program, and bring the depth we need to rise up in the West Coast Conference."

Caitlin Wallace is from Woodbridge High School where she lettered in soccer three years. The 5-5 midfielder was named her team's Most Valuable Offensive Player in 2004 and was an All-Sea View League selection in 2006 and 2007.

Bree Villar is an outside defender and comes to Saint Mary's from South Anchorage High School in Alaska. Villar helped SAHS post a 10-0 record in 2007, while helping the team post eight shutouts and allowing just two goals during her senior season. From her defensive position, she scored two goals and added four assists as a senior, while helping her team post a third place finish in the 2006 state finals.

Chloe Johnson was a four-year letter winner in soccer at San Marcos High School, where she helped her team capture the 2006 Channel League Championships. The center midfielder helped her high school team capture two CIF Division II Championships and was a First Team All-Channel League selection in 2007.

Lindsey added, "Each of these signees have played with championship clubs on championship teams, and we are excited about the competitive spirit they will bring to the field on a daily basis. This class is packed with potential, and each of these young women have the ability, work ethic, personality, and passion to make us a better program on and off the field."

Mercede Koning is another midfield and comes to SMC from Northridge High School in Layton, UT. As a center midfielder, Koning helped her team to a Region 1 runner-up finish in 2007, as she had two assists in a 3-2 overtime loss in the championship game.

Alexandra Ciliento was a four-year varsity letter winner at Horizon High School and scored more than 50 goals in her career. She was named the team's Rookie of the Year in 2004 as she helped her team capture the Arizona 5A state championship that season. She has also been named the offensive most valuable player and was a two-time all-region selection.

Megan Maldonado was a three-sport athlete during her four years at Juan Diego Catholic High School in Draper, Utah. Maldonado, a 5-7 midfielder and defender, lettered all four years in soccer, as well as earning one letter in both lacrosse and basketball. She garnered all-state honors in soccer three times, as she was a first team, second team and honorable mention honoree.

"As a coaching staff, we cannot wait to add these women to our team in the fall and get to work. We are on the cusp of something great here, and this class will escalate our journey to the top of the WCC. They are excited to join our SMC family, and we are just as excited to welcome them and their families to be Gaels," commented Lindsey
